I don't think it's a matter of rhetoric alone; using a power/social roles framework rather than an identity framework also lets us escape traps from conservatives who pretend that treating people decently is somehow giving "minorities" "special rights" that everyone else doesn't have when we see that those steps are in place to protect the disempowered.
