By the way, one of the questions Gaddis addresses is why academia keeps getting Bush wrong - and why it underestimated Reagan too. He comes up with a telling response which, I suppose, applies just as much to the commentariat in general. Note, too, the gentle way he sinks the knife into John Kerry at the very end:
