Huppenthal Recall Boosts Democratic Discourse
But in contrast to fellow columnist Dick Foreman, I think the recall effort has given our democratic spirit an important boost. While 50,000 people in District 20 voted for Senator Huppenthal in November, 30,000 didn’t vote for him, evenly divided between those voting for Libertarian party candidate Warren Severin and those skipping the contest altogether. If I asked those 80,000 people who the President of the United States was, even the staunchest John Kerry supporter will begrudgingly admit it’s George W. Bush. But if we query Bush supporters who their State Senator is, if it weren’t for the recall, many who voted for Senator Huppenthal wouldn’t remember his name.
