Frustration (again!) and Excellence

We are live.

But not everything is bad. Daniel Barkowitz has put together an excellent 4th edition of the Poetry Carnival over at Talking to Myself which you really need to read. Yes, I said need. Speaking of need, the carnival needs volunteers to host upcoming editions. I’ve got one other person who I know specifically has volunteered that I’m going to ask to host the next one, but it would be great to have several editions in advance set up. And here’s hoping Blog Carnival goes live sooner rather than later.

I and the Bird #8

The only thing that would make this better is if it stopped raining here:

From Tony G. at milkriverblog (Texas, US): On Birds and Molluscs, Part I. Tony has assembled a comprehensive piece exploring the relationship between kites and snails. Parts 2 and 3 are planned for Circus of the Spineless, the new blog carnival focused on invertebrate animal blogging, in addition to milkriverblog. Bravo Tony!

Entrepreneur's Journey At The Carnival

For sure:

For the marketers in attendance I can report back that my participation in the blog carnival did not provide any significance difference in terms of a raw traffic increase beyond what a standard blog backlink would provide. I consider participation in a blog carnival similar to other long term online marketing techniques - rinse and repeat and you will build a reputation and traffic through compound effects.

I thought this was pretty good.

Earlier today I paid a visit to a blog carnival hosted by boostrap analysis, Urban dragon hunter and milkriver blog, and sent in a submission on Harvester butterflies. Be sure and check out Circus of the Spineless for some interesting reads and factoids about invertebrate creatures.

The Chagossian Diaspora

Thought you'd like this one:

The Blogheads amongst you will no doubt already be familiar with concept of a blog carnival, regular themed postings hosted on participating weblogs which link to the best (or occasionally worst) posts dealing with the Carnival's theme. There are a multitude of succesful examples including the Carnivals of the Uncapitalists and the Godless and probably at least as many failures. One of the latest attempts is J. Otto Pohl's Mini Carnival of the Diasporas. Helpfully he offers a succinct definition of the concept of diaspora, which is one of those terms that's used quite often, but which is probably quite difficult to tie down.

While browsing the web today, I came up on this.

Each Monday, a Virginia blogger will host a Virginia Blog Carnival, offering just a sample of the topics Virginia bloggers have been writing about during the week. We hope everyone’s curiosity will be piqued to read more of the selected posts, thereby giving more exposure to each participating blogger’s site.

You don't believe our story, officer:

A Blog Carnival works like this, an author of a blog chooses their best post from last week and sends it to the carnival host. The host, which rotates from week to week takes all the links collected and turns them into a single post that is posted on the host's blog. Then people can go to the host's site and find out what other people are saying about the carnival topic.

We had some unwanted downtime this morning, sorry about that. Tangled Bank and the Edge

Whether we like it or not:

Tangled Bank is a semi-monthly collaborative science blog hosted on alternating sites and serving up some clever, often funny, ideas. Imagine a cross between the Public Library of Science and the Journal of Irreproducible Results. The latest edition, Tangled Bank #29, includes a crash course on string theory, an exploration of the evolutionary benefits that led to the abandonment of shells by slugs, and a funny snark at the Discovery Institute’s attacks on evolution, in the form of a proposed revision of the periodic table of the elements. It’s light-hearted, but informative, stuff, written by people who knows their facts, but aren’t too full of themselves.

Summer reading babe

Thought you'd like this one:

I haven't read Jane Eyre, but that review got me thinking about the transformative power of literature, and what books (if any) have actually changed the way I view the world. I'm limiting the scope here to fiction; talking about non-fiction books that have changed my life is a bit of a no-brainer (SES = the revolution, Sense and soul = the constitution). Off the top of my head, I can think of one book that had a major impact on me, Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities. At the start of year 10 we had to pick a book from the school library to do any indepth report on. Wanting to show off to our new, very cool English teacher, I chose Bonfire of the Vanities where I normally would have chosen a David Eddings or Raymond E. Fiest novel. Bonfire changed me in two very important ways: Firstly, I realized that 'literature' isn't inherently difficult to read (leaving aside whether you think Tom Wolfe is literature or just a mess) and from that point I stopped reading only fantasy novels, to the point where I've abandoned plans to be a best-selling fantasy novelist, and I stopped reading Robert Jordan at book four and I haven't gone back. Secondly, Bonfire made me realize that the world is not a nice place. That might seem like a powerfully naive statement, but age 15 I was a pretty naive kid - I tried to convince friends that the school tuckshop would work better if run according to Socialist principles - and Wolfe's drastically cynical yet very funny take on New York was a big, big wake up call.

Anony-blogging

Excuse me, but how do you get this again:

Like SKB, I began blogging anonymously, and for much the same reasons - I didn’t want my professional or personal relationships affected by this “blogging” thing, the whole idea was very new to me and I wasn’t sure I would stick with it anyway. My first blog site was called “Gunner20’s Blog Carnival” - save the snorts please! I called it that because I took up keyboard and pixels in early 2002 because of the daft commentary in the MSM about the Afghanistan campaign, then in full swing. Since Gunner20 was my “Hollywood call sign” when I was the fire support officer for an armored brigade in 3d Armored Division, I thought it jibed with my subject matter,

Did He Just Say That? Oh Yes He Did!

And the point is this:

To be sure, governments have to be watched, for power invariably corrupts, as the current grisly crew in office in London today testify. But though I dislike and distrust politicians, I would prefer to be governed by them than by journalists - a generally whinging, conceited and hypocritical species. It is no wonder politicians despise us, with all our precious airs, our vacuous graces and our many witless vanities. How many journalists does it take to change a light-bulb? We don’t know, because journalists don’t change light bulbs.

Couple of Links

We were thinking the exact thing a second ago:

Second, Storyblogging Carnival XIX, a collection of posts from bloggers who write various types of fiction. I haven't read them all, but I particularly enjoy what I've seen of Fiddle and Burn, "a daily comic strip in prose". Neat idea. The carnival reminds me of my old Spherewide Short Story Symposium, of which there were only two editions before interest waned. My name was cooler, but that was before the whole "blog carnival" meme was established.

The New Blog Carnival Showcase - a chance for new bloggers (3 months old or newer) to get some free exposure. It's a great way to get your beginner's talent discovered. See this post for details. For blogs that are too old, you should consider checking out the entries, since grateful new bloggers tend to reciprocate post links with permalinks.

New Blog Carnival Showcase at IMAO

As if:

Harvey has the New Blog Carnival Showcase posted over at IMAO and unfortunately he's done a great job. I really hoped he'd suck so mine would look great in comparison when I took my turn hosting next Monday. Now, obviously, I'll have to get all ya'll drunk before you read mine so that it looks better than it actually is.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference New Blog Carnival Showcase at IMAO:

The Tangled Bank #27

It could be much worse:

The Tangled Bank is the premier place for the best and brightest blog-writing on science and medicine. It follows the now familiar “Blog Carnivals” where individual bloggers submit interesting articles on science, medicine, natural history or anything that may be of interest to incurable science geeks (which means you if you’re reading this).

Thank you for tuning in to this edition of The Tangled Bank. I hope you had as much fun reading the submissions as I did. This has been a wonderful experience and I highly recommend hosting The Tangled Bank. If you’ve never hosted a Blog Carnival before, give it a try, you won’t regret it.

The Carnival Of Revolutions Is Up.

How many ways can you tell this story:

This Blog Carnival is really about more than simply "revolutions," in the most strict sense of the term. It is dedicated to telling the stories of those struggling for democracy around the world.

Skeptic's Circle

I just noticed this item.

Sean-Paul Kelley at The Agonist also kindly linked to that post earlier today, though without the excuse of a blog carnival.

Tangled Bank #28 at 'Chronicles of a Medical Madhouse'

And the point is this:

Science posts galore, in this edition of the biweekly blog carnival Tangled Bank, hosted by Chronicles of a Medical Madhouse. Thirty posts, including one of my own, on all manner of scientific, medical, and related topics can be rather daunting. So rather than simply point to it every two weeks, I think I should highlight a couple shorter articles or a single longer one. Today, I've chosen the two below after only having time to peruse a small fraction of the total number of posts. But they are definitely worth taking...
